Kakuma Art Project: A fundraising evening in aid of Kakuma Refugee Camp

16 May 2024
Free 6pm

We are delighted to host a fundraising event in the gallery at 6pm on Thursday 16 May for Kakuma Art Project in aid of Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

Kakuma Art Project is a creative collaboration between English artist Tara Dominick and Hubert Senga, a Congolese refugee living in the camp.

In 2023 Tara painted BOAT, a picture of social conscience, in her garden studio in Devon. A world away from understanding life as a refugee but deeply affected by the refugee crisis, she wondered if BOAT could possibly support a refugee charity.

When she connected with Hubert, she knew she had found the right charity in Generation Aid, a refugee-led community non-profit organisation aiming to reskill and empower refugees living in the Kakuma camp through innovative education.

The pair formed a firm friendship and soon developed exciting plans to run art workshops from inside the camp. These workshops will give refugees access to paper, brushes and paints and a chance to tell their personal stories through a visual medium that can be understood worldwide.

At this special evening event, visitors will have the opportunity to buy one of 10 Limited Edition prints of BOAT. The proceeds will fund the art materials for the first workshops and the art produced will be exhibited in the first-ever Community Art Gallery in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Tara will give a short talk on the project at the event and we will hear a heartfelt message of thanks from Hubert in Kenya.
